Named one of St. Louis’ ‘Most Influential Business Women’
Aug 14, 2013
(August 14, 2013, St. Louis, MO/Edwardsville, IL) Teresa Katubig, CPA, CPP, PHR, President and CEO of Extra Help, Inc., one of the region’s largest employment, payroll and workforce services companies, has been honored as one of 2013’s “Most Influential Business Women” by the St. Louis Business Journal. The award is given to women who have not only made an impact in business, but also in the St. Louis community at large.
The feature highlights Katubig’s humble beginnings, starting as a shift manager at a McDonald’s – to now owning a multi-million dollar company. While working at the fast food restaurant, Teresa put herself through college at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, while supporting two young children. It was here, the article notes, that Teresa credits the foundations of her workforce management company.
“I feel I owe a lot of my success in business to having worked hard for it from the get go,” said Katubig. “I got a lot of my experience with recruiting at McDonald’s before I went to college, so to be recognized for my accomplishments is really humbling. It’s a big part of why I’m committed to so many charitable organizations – I think it’s important to pay it forward.”
As part of her commitment to supporting the greater St. Louis community, Katubig has recently become an outspoken advocate for early childhood health and education, a necessity in the earliest years of life – something she believes in crucial to creating a productive future workforce, and in turn, a healthy economy.
Katubig has also used her experience and influence in heading Extra Help, Inc. to promote other women. From the time she founded her company in 1995, and grew it into a regional leader, Katubig has devoted herself to assisting the development of young women. Not only does she support organizations that empower them, such as the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club’s “Table for Four” program, YWCA of Metro St. Louis, Circle of Women and the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois, but she mentors and nurtures young women within her own organization.
“Teresa provides our staff with unlimited opportunities for personal and professional development,” said Erin Kopec, Marketing Administrator at Extra Help. “We are all involved in training seminars, networking groups and opportunities for continuing education and certifications.”
In addition to promoting the professional growth of her staff, Extra Help itself has seen significant expansion in the last year, acquiring payroll administration companies in Missouri and Alabama. New additions in Indiana and Texas are currently in the works as well. Extra Help’s growth also includes the launch of TeamSource in 2012, which is a proprietary comprehensive workforce management solution developed by Katubig and her team.
“It’s really just been an incredible year,” said Katubig. “We’re growing with the solutions we can offer, and where we can offer them. I think by enabling my team to be a part of this process, we’ve been able to succeed together.”
For the past three years, Extra Help has been featured in the St Louis Business Journal’s Book of Lists’ Largest Women-Owned Businesses, moving from #17 in 2009 and 2010, up to #15 in 2011. Extra Help, Inc. was also named the 11th fastest-growing company in the St Louis region. In 2011, Extra Help, Inc. made the Inc 5000 list as one of the nation’s fastest-growing companies. Most recently, Extra Help, Inc. was named the Business of the Year for the Marion, IL Chamber of Commerce; recognized as one of the ‘Best in Customer Service and a ‘Top 20 Small Business’ by the St. Louis Small Business Monthly.
Despite her professional responsibilities, Katubig remains active in several of the communities where her business operates. Extra Help, Inc. belongs to sixteen different Chambers of Commerce in Illinois and Missouri, and is an active Rotarian. She is also closely involved the United Way, and is a board member with the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois.
