Five Tips To Help You Prepare For Your First Warehouse Shift
Take Care of Yourself
Many new hires tend to underestimate the physical work that is involved in warehouse positions. Due to more physical exertion, staying hydrated is especially important while working in a warehouse. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that warehouse employees drink water every 15 minutes in order to decrease the risk of illness. Be sure to bring a water bottle with you to ensure that you have water throughout your shift.
Look out for symptoms of dehydration including:
- Sunken Eyes
- Fatigue
- Difficulty Focusing
If you notice this in yourself or a coworker, take a break and hydrate. Clear urine indicates that you are hydrated; If it is not, your body needs more water.
On a similar note, it is important to keep a balanced diet. A diet that has a mix of proteins, carbs, veggies, and fruits can help to decrease the risk of an injury and increase your energy. Getting a good night’s sleep is another aspect that will affect your health and wellbeing on the job.
Many new hires have a tendency to overwork themselves to make a good impression. As a result, this could lead to burnout in the first few weeks or months. Find a pace that works for you, or fluctuate speeds throughout your shift. Taking care of your body is essential in this line of work.
Talk with your coworkers
It can be intimidating to be the new person at a job, however, it is important to push through the jitters and talk with your coworkers. Using manners with your coworkers is an obvious given in any line of work. Part of that is simply saying hello with a smile when you see them. Try to get to know your coworkers by asking them questions about their life. An easy way to get your coworkers talking is by packing a lunch and sitting in the breakroom with them. Lunch gives you the opportunity to socialize with them. Creating friendships with coworkers can help you to be more stimulated throughout the day. It can increase your sense of value and belonging in the company. It results in an increase in your overall engagement as well. In 2018 a Gallup poll revealed that employees who have a close friend at work are twice as likely to have a sense of well-being in their job.

Getting comfortable talking to coworkers will also help you to better understand your priorities and responsibilities. On your first day, your supervisor will likely take you on a tour of the warehouse and tell you everything you need to know for your position. Do not be afraid to ask questions. That is why they are there! They want you to be successful, so if you need clarification on something, do not be afraid to ask.
Dress For The Job
Depending on the company, warehouses can be different temperatures, so dress accordingly. Going into a freezing warehouse without extra layers would not make for an enjoyable shift. This would be something mentioned in the new hire materials you receive before you start the job. However, you can always reach out and ask if you are unsure.
Another highly important aspect of your attire is your shoes. Some employers require you to wear safety shoes or safety boots. No matter what type of shoes you have to wear, it is important that they have structure, support, and comfort. This job requires a lot of time on your feet. Investing in a pair of shoes and some extra support will be worth it. As always, if you do not know what to wear, ask your supervisor. Safety First
Although safety is important in all areas of work, it is particularly important in a warehouse position. It is crucial to read your employers’ safety standards before your first day on the job. Your preparation will not only benefit your employer’s first impression of you but also decrease the risk of you breaking one of their rules and/or getting injured.
Many of these positions tend to require some heavy lifting. Lifting items incorrectly increases your risk of injury or back pain. Be aware of your form when you are lifting items. The proper lifting technique is to bend at the knees, put the object between your legs, and lift with the legs while your back is straight. This can save you a lot of unnecessary strain.

Be Early
Showing up early on your first day is proper etiquette for any job. Not only does it show your supervisors that you are reliable, but it also creates some time for you to get yourself ready before your shift starts. More often than not, companies have paperwork for you to complete on your first day. By being early, you can fill out your paperwork and still clock in at the time your shift is scheduled to start. It also gives you time to use the bathroom, have a coffee, and do anything else that helps you prepare for your shift.
Another thing to consider is that warehouses do not always have any big company signage. This can make it hard to find where you were directed to go. If you have not already physically been to the location, it would be best to scope it out before your first day. That way you know where you are going and how long it takes.
