National Safety Month: Summer Warehouse Safety Tips
Jun 3, 2024
The National Safety Council which was established in June 1996, comes together with organizations and individuals across the country in observance of National Safety Month, which is dedicated to bringing extra attention to the safety issues faced in the workplace to anyplace.
June is National Safety Month, a time to bring awareness about safety and health in the workplace. At HireLevel, we are committed to the well-being and safety of all our employees. As the temperatures rise in the summer months, it’s important to take extra precautions to maintain a healthy work environment.
In this blog, we will share top warehouse summer safety tips to help you stay safe, cool, and productive while at work.
Warehouse safety is important to help prevent accidents and injuries. Typically, in a warehouse/manufacturing setting, there could be potential hazards such as heavy machinery, moving vehicles (forklifts, etc.), and high shelving. By implementing proper safety training and the use of personal protective equipment, companies can help protect their employees. In the summer months, risks can be increased due to high temperatures, which can cause heat-related illnesses and/or accidents.
Many warehouses are not temperature-controlled; therefore, it can be very hot in the summer months. To keep your body heat down, it’s important to stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. Aim to drink small amounts of water frequently throughout your shift. Employers should provide easy access to water stations and encourage hydration breaks to avoid dehydration or heat exhaustion.
It’s important to wear lightweight and breathable clothing or moisture-wicking fabrics, to help keep your body cool. While staying cool is important, never compromise on safety. Please make sure that all required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety vests, gloves, glasses, and helmets, is worn correctly.
Schedule regular breaks in a cool, shaded area. Taking short, frequent breaks can help prevent heat exhaustion and reduce fatigue.
Be aware of the signs of heat-related illnesses, such as fatigue, dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps, or excessive sweating. Warehouse Supervisors should monitor workers for symptoms and provide immediate assistance if needed.
Cluttered floors, spilled materials, or obstructed pathways could lead to accidents such as trips, slips, and falls. Clear any obstacles that could impede ventilation or create hazards.
Training emphasizes safe work practices tailored to hot conditions, such as adjusting work schedules to cooler parts of the day and rotating tasks to minimize heat exposure. OSHA requires employers to provide a safe working environment, including addressing heat-related hazards.
Proper training helps ensure compliance with this regulation.

Properly maintained and safely operated equipment reduces the risk of accidents, such as machinery malfunctions or improper use, which can lead to serious injuries. Inspect and maintain equipment regularly to ensure it operates safely.
Provide comprehensive training for all employees on the safe operation of equipment, including how to recognize and report hazards.
Promoting a safety culture in the warehouse is essential for ensuring the well-being of employees and the efficiency of operations. A safety culture promoted by managers, supervisors, and employees encourages everyone to prioritize safety, leading to fewer accidents, higher morale, and increased productivity.
Encourage employees to speak up about safety concerns and report potential hazards.
National Safety Month is a reminder of the importance of workplace safety, especially in environments like warehouses where summer conditions can heighten risks. By following these safety tips, we can create a safer, healthier workplace for everyone. At HireLevel, we are dedicated to supporting our employees with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe and thrive in their roles.
Stay safe this summer and remember safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s work together to make our warehouses safer for all.
